The cost for most of the activities at Mayanja River Lodge is included in the accommodation rate. Feel free to decide on the day or to email and arrange with us the activities you wish to participate in.
The location of Mayanja River Lodge is a birder’s paradise! We have up to 420 different species of birds here in the Kafu River Basin. One of our birding guides will escort you to the prime spots for birdwatching.
Bush walks are the best way to immerse yourself completely in nature. You can experience the creations of Mother Nature from close by, as you normally wouldn’t from a car.
For all walks you’ll be escorted by one of our guides, trained in wildlife tracking too. You can technically walk anywhere but we advise going on one of our pre-mapped out walks as we’ve studied these so that you’ll get to see the area’s features and highlights. These walks go from the lodge itself or along the swamps bordering the river.
From the lodge a loop will take you to the river, around the swamps and through the bush thicket, back to the lodge.
The river walk has a couple of raised platforms from where you can look over the river and surrounding swamps. Hopefully you’ll be able to see the elusive Sitatunga, waterbucks, bushbucks and so so many birds.
A canoe cruise on the Mayanja River is an activity not to be missed/skipped!
It is the best way to see the river and its inhabitants. You will come across crocodiles, hippos, antelopes drinking and so many water birds!
We will drive you upstream, to a launch site where you’ll find the wooden canoes waiting for you. The canoes can carry up to 4 people, plus your guide. Be warned – you’ll be helping out with the rowing!
The duration of the trip is approximately 2 hours. However, if you want a longer or shorter trip, we can arrange this for you. The best times for the canoe cruises are in the early morning and late afternoons.
A machan is a simple raised wooden platform, generally between 3-5 meters up, used to spot and observe the wildlife below. We have set up 28 machans around the area and you’ll surely come across them while on your game drives, bush walks or canoe cruises.
The main commercial activity in this area is cattle ranches, to which we will happily organize a visit should you so wish.
